Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros capped a five-show trio run at The Guild Theatre in Menlo Park with performances on Friday and Saturday nights. Bob Weir’s longtime RatDog bandmate, guitarist Steve Kimock, was among the guest musicians who joined the Grateful Dead/Dead Company guitarist onstage at the intimate Bay Area venue.
Kimock joined Weir, bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane throughout both Friday and Saturday’s performances. Friday’s concert also featured fiddler Mads Tolling and horn player Brian Switzer, who are part of the extended Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Wolfpack ensemble, with Tolling also coming back for Saturday’s show.
Friday’s first set featured Weir favorites like “Cassidy,” “Black-Throated Wind” and “I Need A Miracle” along with staple covers “Good Morning, School Girl” and “El Paso,” among other classics from the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter Grateful Dead repertoire. The second set began with “The Winners,” a song first performed by Weir with RatDog bassist Rob Wasserman and often played by the band.
The remainder of the set contained “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider,” frequent jam vehicles “Dark Star” and “Playing In The Band,” The Beatles’ trippy “Tomorrow Never Knows,” a tender “Standing On The Moon” and a closing “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.” Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” was tapped for Friday’s encore.
Saturday’s show kicked off with “Jack Straw,” followed by RatDog’s “Ashes & Glass” which included its usual segue into and out of “Don’t Let Go.” Pulling from the Garcia/Hunter catalog, “Row Jimmy” came next, with Dylan’s “Queen Jane Approximately” trailing. Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Lovelight” rounded out the opening set.
Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros’ final set at The Guild Theatre began with Kimock assisting on a cover of Kris Kristofferson’s “Me And Bobby McGee.” The band and guests proceeded through “Greatest Story Ever Told” and The Beatles’ “Come Together,” before teeing up “Estimated Prophet” into “Eyes Of The World.” Kimock played lap steel guitar on “Looks Like Rain” ahead of “The Wheel” and “U.S. Blues” drawing the set to a close. Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” was the last song of the night and five-show run.
