Darius Rucker teamed up with The Black Crowes on the band’s 1991 hit “She Talks To Angels” at the 2023 CMT Music Awards last night. The collaboration was one of many hosted at the event held at Austin’s Moody Center and broadcast live on CBS including an all-star tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Keyboardist Chuck Leavell sat-in on piano for the song from The Black Crowes’ debut studio album, Shake Your Money Maker. Leavell, who contributed piano and organ to the original 1990 LP, also took part in the two-song medley honoring Lynyrd Skynyrd that ended the evening.
The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson shared lead vocal duties with the Hootie & The Blowfish singer. Rucker recently announced an extensive summer tour. The Black Crowes and Darius Rucker will appear in an upcoming CMT Crossroads special.
“The song’s so iconic, everybody knows it,” Rucker explained of “She Talks To Angels” in a chat with The Tennessean backstage in Austin. “In Hootie lore, that’s the song that inspired me to write ‘Let Her Cry.’ For me to get to play with those guys – and to get to do it in tv in front of the world – it’s pretty awesome.”

Sunday’s awards ceremony also saw Alanis Morissette perform her breakthrough smash “You Oughta Know” with Lainey Wilson, Ingrid Andress, Madeline Edwards and Morgan Wade; while No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani joined forces with Carly Pearce for Tragic Kingdom hit “Just A Girl.” Winners at the 2023 CMT Music Awards included Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll, HARDY featuring Lainey Wilson, Zac Brown Band and Kane Brown & Katelyn Brown.
