Watch The Lil Smokies & Emily Scott Robinson Perform Stunning Tom Petty Cover On ‘eTown’

54

Montana-birthed string band The Lil Smokies and folk artist Emily Scott Robinson are featured on the latest episode of the Boulder, Colorado-based eTown radio program. Both acts joined forces with eTown host Nick Forster, Helen Forster and house band the eTones on a cover of Tom Petty’s “Walls” to end the episode.

Nick Forster and the musicians featured in the show pick a cover to collaborate on to close each installment of eTown. “Walls” was selected as the finale for show #2314. Tom Petty penned “Walls (Circus)” and initially released the song as the lead single from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 1996 soundtrack album Songs and Music from “She’s The One.” The LP also included the more upbeat “Walls (No. 3).”

“It’s always a treat to figure out what song to play and we’ve chosen a good one … thank you Tom Petty,” Forster said while the collective started the “Walls” finale during the taping at eTown Hall in Boulder on February 27. The Lil Smokies dobroist Andy Dunnigan and Emily Scott Robinson shared lead vocal duties on “Walls.” Watch how it went below:

This week’s episode started with The Lil Smokies — Dunningan, guitarist Matt “Rev” Rieger, fiddler Jake Simpson, bassist Jean-Luc Goddard and new banjoist Sam Zickefoose — performing a series of songs. Forster then interviewed the band about their evolution before The Smokies played one more tune.

Next, Nick Forster brought out Urban Peak CEO Christina Carlson to discuss youth homelessness in Denver and surrounding areas. Vocalist/guitarist Emily Scott Robinson then spoke with Forster and performed a few songs before the “Walls” collaboration ended the episode.
