Watch Warren Haynes, David Crosby, Phil Lesh & More Let Their Freak Flag Fly With ABB In 2011

34

Warren Haynes was born on this date in 1960 in Asheville, North Carolina. The renowned guitarist and singer-songwriter is perhaps most well-known for his work with The Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh & Friends and his own Gov’t Mule. On July 27, 2011 all three of those worlds gloriously collided at ABB’s Tune In to Hep C benefit concert at New York City’s Beacon Theatre, which saw a host of special guests throughout the evening including David Crosby, Graham Nash, Phil Lesh, Warren’s Gov’t Mule bandmate Danny Louis and more.

The star-studded benefit concert began with The Allman Brothers Band on tunes from their repertoire including “Don’t Want You No More,” “It’s Not My Cross To Bear,” “One Way Out,” “Statesboro Blues” and more. The first set also saw guest spots from jazz luminaries Bill Evans, Ron Holloway and Natalie Cole.

Set two got underway with David Crosby, Graham Nash and ABB guitarist Derek Trucks performing the CSNY classic “Teach Your Children.” Haynes would also join Crosby and Nash to sing Stephen Stills’ part on an a capella “Find The Cost Of Freedom.” Phil Lesh then emerged to help out — along with keyboardist Danny Louis and drummer James van der Bogert — on David Crosby’s “Cowboy Movie,” the studio version of which the Grateful Dead bassist played on for Croz’s 1971 debut solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name.

A dream lineup of Crosby, Nash, Lesh, Louis and Bogert along with ABB’s Haynes, Gregg Allman, Derek Trucks, Butch Trucks and Marc Quinones then delivered a fiery performance of another Crosby song, “Almost Cut My Hair,” off CSNY’s 1970 album Déjà Vu. Croz got a huge rise out of the audience when he began to sing the counterculture anthem and Haynes would take the second verse as the song has long been in the Mule repertoire. Warren and Derek also added smoking solos.

When David Crosby passed away in January, Haynes penned a tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter noting the 2011 Beacon collaboration. Read an excerpt:

“I didn’t know David very well but I cherish the one time we played together, which was at a Hepatitis C Benefit at the Beacon Theater in NYC with the Allman Brothers Band along with David and Graham Nash, Phil Lesh, and Natalie Cole. It was a huge moment for me to duet with David on ‘Almost Cut My Hair’ and to sing Stephen Stills’ part on ‘Find the Cost of Freedom’ along with him and Graham. I’ll never forget it.”

In March, Haynes returned to the Beacon Theatre for the seventh annual Love Rocks NYC benefit where he noted that the stage was the last time he saw Croz. In a tribute to David, Warren and guitarist Jimmy Vivino then led another “Almost Cut My Hair.” Watch the 2023 performance:
