The Skinny: Dead & Company is brought to you by Section 119. Check out their Reactive Swim Trunks that show a pattern when they get wet! These swim trunks feature an elastic waist, are made from recycled plastic bottles, are quick drying and have a mesh brief liner and classic fit. Subtle or loud, these swim trunks can be worn proud.

A couple of weeks ago, Dead & Company’s Final Tour officially kicked off at The Kia Forum outside of Los Angeles with a pairing of “Shakedown Street” and “Cold Rain And Snow” and on Tuesday in Charlotte, they once again employed the same opening combination. The “Shakedown” opener led to a brief but funky jam that dissolved into a sturdy version of “Cold Rain.”

Guitarist Bob Weir helmed the subsequent “Loser,” which marked the beloved Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter composition’s first appearance in a D&C setlist this year. The crawling “Loser” was capped with an intricate solo performed by guitarist John Mayer.

The tour debuts continued with Mayer leading “Dire Wolf” and Weir steering a slow-burning rendering of the year’s first “Loose Lucy.” The boogie-woogie blues-infused piano playing of Jeff Chimenti was prominently displayed within “Dire Wolf,” while his chunky organ anchored “Loose Lucy.”

A pretty exchange between Mayer and Chimenti’s piano served as an introduction to “The Wheel,” which saw continued interplay between the two musicians throughout the prevailing jam that produced a joyous, uplifting sequence before returning to the main theme ahead of a turn that incorporated a reggae vibe akin to Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up.” The band then dove into “Bertha,” sharply charging through the upbeat tune.

The last tour debut of the first set, Weir’s “Let It Grow” took on a jazzy feel from Mayer’s nimble runs up and down his guitar neck, Chimenti’s complimentary piano and bassist Oteil Burbridge’s assertive responses. “Let It Grow” sprouted an elaborate jam that cycled through distinct themes and several changes in pace before rounding back to the song’s emphatic resolution.

Following set break, Dead & Co. initiated the second set with the esteemed “Help On The Way” into “Slipknot!” into “Franklin’s Tower” trilogy. Drummer Jay Lane was particularly integral to navigating his bandmates through the numerous passages making up the “Help/Slip/Franklin’s” suite.

Set Two Preview

The band again leaned into a jazz-fusion motif while making the elongated transition from “Help” into “Slipknot!” building a free-flowing bridge between the two compositions. A triumphant arrival of “Slipknot!” was soon trailed by the jovial emergence of “Franklin’s Tower.” Chimenti’s organ took charge of the “Franklin’s” jam, stacking up a tension-filled solo and pushing toward a satisfying resolution ahead of the dew rolling away.

Next was “Fire On The Mountain” which arrived without its frequent dance partner “Scarlet Begonias.” Burbridge sang lead on the concisely presented “Fire” and from the start showed off equally melodic bass playing skills. Burbridge’s bass then signaled the abrupt start of Weir’s classic “The Other One.” Not long after Bobby sang the first verse of “The Other One” came the transition into the evening’s “Drums” display.

Lane and drummer Mickey Hart went minimal at the onset of “Drums,” layering in restrained rhythms. Hart quickly moved to his recently acquired xylophone-like instrument known as a Balafon and Burbridge joined in on his banjo bass, as he’s done often on the Final Tour. With Lane playing his drum kit, the trio locked into a groove and then proceed to venture out as Burbridge began to scat along to the rhythm.

Progressing on, Weir, Mayer, Chimenti and Burbridge resumed their place on stage as Hart quickly employed The Beam for its drone to open the gateway to “Space.” Starting from a minimalist approach, “Space” picked up steam as the drummers came back to steer the return to “The Other One.” Weir belted out the second verse of his early-Dead favorite after he and his bandmates worked up a protracted arrival into the fully formed structure of the song.

Weir then captained the bluesy Garcia/Hunter ballad “Black Peter,” adding a haunting element to the tour debut of the poignant Workingman’s Dead classic. Bobby was in charge of the final song of the set as well, fronting the group on a rousing, set-closing performance of “Sugar Magnolia.” The patriotic anthem “U.S. Blues” was called up to serve as the encore for the concert in Charlotte.

Dead & Company’s Final Tour continues on Thursday at Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, North Carolina. Purchase livestreams for the Raleigh show and all The Final Tour performances via nugs.net.
