Dinosaur Jr. will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its landmark album Where You Been with a string of shows in London and New York. The series of 11 concerts will feature a full-album performance along with “a spattering of special guests and friends to sit in each night.”
The series begins with a run of four shows at London’s The Garage from November 12th through 15th. J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph then return stateside for a seven-show engagement at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg from December 1st through 3rd and 5th through 8th. Tickets for the Dinosaur Jr. Where You Been 30th-anniversary shows go on sale to the public on Thursday, May 25th at 10 a.m. ET. A pre-sale begins tomorrow, May 22nd, at 10 a.m. ET. See below for a full list of tour dates.
Released on February 9th, 1993 at the height of the grunge movement, Where You Been marked Dinosaur Jr.’s second album on a major label and sixth overall. Containing the minor hit “Start Choppin’” whose video became a regular for alternative MTV programs like 120 Minutes, Where You Been marked a major breakthrough for Dinosaur Jr. into a growing rock movement outside the mainstream.
While Kurt Cobain‘s suicide and subsequent dissolution of Nirvana the following year would signal the inevitable end of grunge, Dinosaur Jr. went on to hit its commercial peak four months later on Without a Sound, featuring its biggest hit to date, “Feel the Pain”. Over the course of 30 years and half a dozen more albums, Dinosaur Jr.’s abrasively fuzzed-out tone propelled by Mascis’ guitar heroics has become a touchstone style for the next generation, with Where You Been serving as a pre-requisite for alt-rock of the new millennium.
