Jason Isbell Looks For Someone To “Save The World” On New Single [Listen]

34

Jason Isbell combines his protective fatherly instincts with his worries about the outside world on his latest single, “Save the World”. The song confronting mass shootings in schools will appear on his upcoming album with the 400 UnitWeathervanes, out June 9th via Southeastern Records.

Sleek modern production introduces “Save the World” as Isbell reflects on the modern world with the opening line, “I left my wallet in the hotel room / They barely let me on the plane.” The everyday existence of terror in the United States continues with the following, “I didn’t get a chance to check the news / Somebody shot up a classroom again.”

As the father of a seven-year-old daughter, Isbell grapples with sending Mercy Rose out into a world that he can’t control. As a recovering alcoholic and addict with over a decade of sobriety, Isbell knows something about control, both the things he can control and those he can’t. Luckily, he has his wife Amanda Shires, whom he asks to swear she’ll “Save the World” when he loses his grip. Who knows, maybe Mercy Rose has a shot at it too.

“There is something about boundaries on this record,” Isbell said of his first album since 2020’s Reunions. “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.”
