King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have announced their new album, and, fitting with the band’s penchant for epic description, the title is PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation. The Australian psych-rock unit did not provide a release date but noted that pre-orders open May 16th.
The band announced the new album on Sunday via social media with a post revealing the title and cover. Designed by longtime collaborator Jason Galea, the artwork and title together certainly solidify the band’s earlier claim that this new album will be “heavy as fuck.” With the apocalyptic title and artwork, the aura of PetroDragonic Apocalypse appears to point back to themes of ecological catastrophe, a common motif for King Gizzard and a central point of their 2019 thrash metal album, Infest the Rats’ Nest.
PetroDragonic Apocalypse signals the end of a prolonged period of silence for King Gizzard. After releasing their fifth album of the year—and 23rd overall—with Changes in October 2022, the band went quiet in the studio as they finished out an extensive Europe/U.K. tour that ended back in March. In the interim, multi-instrumentalist Ambrose Kenny-Smith began the rollout for a new country-tinged album from his garage rock side project, The Murlocs, which also features KGLW bassist Cook Craig.
Later this month, King Gizzard will return to the U.S. to play Boston Calling. After that, the band embarks on its North American Residency Tour, playing multi-night runs in Tennessee, Chicago, Colorado, and Seattle.
