Singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Amanda Shires and the late pianist Bobbie Nelson’s recording of “Always On My Mind” is the latest single shared off their upcoming collaborative album. Loving You is set for release on June 23 through Silver Knife/ATO Records.
Bobbie Nelson, a longtime member of her brother Willie Nelson’s Family Band, died in March 2022 at age 91.
In 2013, Shires was introduced to Bobbie Nelson through mutual friend, harmonica player and Family Band member Mickey Raphael. In 2021, while Shires was recording her album Take It Like A Man, she reached out to Bobbie Nelson to record the Willie Nelson-staple “Always On My Mind,” because, as Shires explained, “the only piano that fits that song is Bobbie’s.”
“Always On My Mind” was left off Take It Like A Man when it was released last year. Shires and Nelson instead decided to record an entire album of songs that have served as inspiration for the pair of musicians and included the “Always On My Mind” recording on Loving You.
Other songs recorded by Shires and Nelson included “Over The Rainbow,” “Dream A Little Dream Of Me,” “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground,” “Waltz Across Texas,” and “Summertime” (featuring Willie Nelson), among others.
