Animal Collective shared the reissue of their 2000 debut album Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished today. Along with a remastered edition of the original LP, the collection contains an EP of previously unreleased material including a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.”
Credited to Animal Collective’s Avey Tare (David Portner) and Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) before the full collective band name was used on releases, Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished initially arrived in August 2000 as a limited pressing of CDs. Animal Collective announced the reissue earlier this year and shared a remastered cut of the album’s “Chocolate Girl” as well as the previously unreleased “Untitled 1.”
The latter is one of five tracks on an EP of previously unreleased material from the Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished sessions titled A Night at Mr. Raindrop’s Holistic Supermarket, mixed by Animal Collective’s Deakin (Josh Dibb). The EP also contains a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.”
Avey Tare and Panda Bear’s “Dreams” sees the duo giving the classic rock cut a fittingly surreal treatment with a synth line reminiscent of classic Dr. Dre production and a steady percussive rumbling that harkens to the “thunder” spoken about on the chorus. The chorus itself contains a more drawn-out, viscous vocal cadence that lends to the cover’s psychedelia.
