The latest episode of the 60 Songs That Explain The ‘90s podcast focuses on the Nirvana song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Host Rob Harvilla was joined by Courtney Love to discuss the Nevermind classic and she sang an alternate set of unused lyrics written by her late husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
As Brooklyn Vegan noted, the podcast inspired Harvilla’s upcoming book Songs That Explain The ‘90s, which will arrive in November. Harvilla has already published many more podcast episodes than the number in its title suggests.
Among the podcast’s previous episodes was an examination of “Doll Parts” by Love’s band Hole. After listening to that episode, Love became a fan of the podcast leading to her appearance on the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” episode. When the discussion turned to “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Love shared alternate lyrics written in Cobain’s notebooks, some of which she had discovered only recently.
