An all-star band featuring members of Cool Cool CoolThe Nth PowerThe Motet, and Snarky Puppy continued what has become a tradition during New Orleans Jazz Fest with a tribute to the music and legacy of Steely Dan at The Howlin’ Wolf late Thursday night.

With Jazz Fest weekend two just getting underway, a whole new crop of fresh-faced music-lovers joined the already ragged ranks who had Fested through weekend one and the Daze Between, and what better to unite them than the inexplicably universal appeal of the Dan?

Led by The Motet keyboardist Joey Porter, the band featured the seven core members of Cool Cool Cool including Craig Brodhead (guitar, keys), Michelangelo Carubba (drums), Shira Elias (vocals), and Sammi Garett (vocals) as well as trumpeter Chris Brouwers and saxophonists Josh Schwartz and Greg Sanderson, otherwise known as The Horn Section. Other familiar collaborators on the roster included The Nth Power‘s Nick Cassarino (guitar, vocals) and Nate Edgar (bass), Snarky Puppy percussionist Nate Werth, and soulful singer Lyle Divinsky, plus a sit-in by bassist Aaron Bellamy on “Green Earrings” as the clock ticked toward 4:00 a.m.

With not a single weak link in the band, each member had their chance to impress the audience with their individual musicianship, but it was when the players connected with each other musically—like during expressive dueling guitar solos from Cassarino and Brodhead and the powerful tag-team percussion of Carubba and Werth—that the group’s true potency was apparent.
