TAUK and Kanika Moore delivered a matchup for the ages on Saturday night in New Orleans with a special Parliament-Funkadelic vs. Sly and the Family Stone showdown at the Toulouse Theatre. The late-night throwdown featured guest appearances from Antwaun Stanley (Vulfpeck), The Horn Section, keyboardist D-Vibes, and guitarist DJ Williams (Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe).
With an instrumental powerhouse like TAUK, the band was forced to farm out some vocal talent to pull off a tribute to two towering pillars of funk music. Luckily, the foursome has become well-acquainted with Doom Flamingo vocalist Kanika Moore over the past year, issuing a string of original singles and touring around the nation for the well-received TAUK Moore outing.
Moore’s talents notwithstanding, it was going to take even more vocal firepower to pull off this mashup. Enter golden-throated Vulfpeck collaborator Antwaun Stanley, and Kanika had a formidable opponent onstage to engage with for the show’s titular battle. Plus, the entire time, keeping the beat on the drums was TAUK’s secret weapon Isaac Teel who in addition to being a propulsive force of drumming is also a majestic singer.
The show’s setlist was filled with back-to-back hits from both band’s extensive catalog including “P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)”, “Give Up The Funk”, “I Want To Take You Higher”, “Flashlight”, “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)”, and more. In the midst of the show, Antwaun Stanley even managed to sneak in a take on his original “Speed Of Night”, followed by the TAUK and Kanika collab “Supernova”. Plus it wouldn’t be a Jazz Fest late-night without some unexpected special guests, with D-Vibes and DJ Williams joining in throughout.
