See Bob Weir Join Lukas Nelson & POTR In Ventura For A Grateful Dead Favorite

Lukas Nelson + POTR came to the Majestic Ventura Theatre in Ventura, California on Thursday. Guitarist Bob Weir joined the band for the Grateful Dead classic “Althea” during the Southern California concert.

The POTR show just north of Los Angeles took place ahead of Lukas’s father Willie Nelson’s two-day, all-star 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl, which Weir also contributed to as did Lukas. Weir and Nelson got warmed up in Ventura ahead of the celebratory shows in L.A. with a rendition of the Jerry Garcia/Rober Hunter composition “Althea,” which appeared on the Grateful Dead’s 1980 album, Go To Heaven.

Bobby and Lukas have collaborated on the song before. In 2017, Weir joined Nelson and POTR for “Althea” and more during a show coinciding with San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass event. In 2018, Bobby and Lukas teamed up once again for more “Althea” action at SF’s Great American Music Hall. A handful of other versions of “Althea” were played by the pair.

Weir and Nelson resumed their collaboration on the Go To Heaven gem in Ventura on Thursday. The pair would swap verses, although there seemed to be some audio issues with the vocal mic. The band powered through with Bobby taking a solo ahead of the bridge and Lukas adding some spicy riffage to close out the tune.
