See Brothers Comatose & Jim Lauderdale Unite For Bluegrass-Fueled ‘Dead Flowers’ Cover

Bay Area-based string band The Brothers Comatose and renowned singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale both performed sets of their own at MerleFest last weekend. The musicians also teamed up at a museum on-site to film a rousing cover of The Rolling Stones classic “Dead Flowers.”

Penned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones originally released “Dead Flowers” on their 1971 album, Sticky Fingers. The song was birthed as part of an era where the band was fusing country music with rock.

“Dead Flowers” has long been part of The Brothers Comatose’s repertoire. A version appears on their debut studio album, 2010’s Songs From The Stoop.

The Brothers Comatose start their joint cover of “Dead Flowers” a capella before Lauderdale handles lead vocals. Jim Lauderdale’s voice combines beautifully with those of Alex Morrison and Ben Morrison. Each artist gathered around a single mic to give the cover a down-home feel.
