The Avett Brothers Load Wolf Trap Run Opener With Rarities

The Avett Brothers launched a three-night run at the gorgeous Filene Center at Wolf Trap. Seth Avett, Scott Avett and company performed a number of rarities during night one in Vienna, Virginia.

The day before the show, The Avett Bros tweeted out a quote from Seth Avett in the Fairfax County Times hinting that the band would be mining their expansive catalog. Check out the tweet below:

The Avetts kicked off their set with the staple “Laundry Room” off I and Love and You. The band offered three more tunes from their landmark 2009 album including “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,” the title track and “Kick Drum Heart.”

They would dip evenly from True Sadness. The first song The Avetts played from the 2016 LP was the 2023 debut of “Mama, I Don’t Believe,” a song they’ve played just 27 times since its live debut on August 31, 2014.

The biggest bust out in terms of time was the traditional “Soldier’s Joy,” last time played on October 27, 2018 for a total gap of 212 shows. “Soldier’s Joy” has been played just 14 times since its debut on September 29, 2014.

The group continued with stape “Murder In The City,” a cover of the Jim Croce classic “Operator,” “Morning Song” and “Living of Love,” the latter off the 2007 album Emotionalism. Another Emotionalism song, “Pretty Girl From Chile,” followed. Debuted on June 29, 2006, the song saw regular rotation thereafter but became a rarity post-pandemic.

Following “I and Love and You,” Scott and Seth dusted off their dad Jim Avett’s “Signs.” The Avett Bros last played their father’s tune on July 7, 2019 for a gap of 169 shows.

Finally, the band wrapped their set with “Salvation Song.” The track from the group’s 2004 LP, Mignonette, was in heavy rotation in the 2000s but waxed rare in the teens. The Avett Brothers returned to encore with the True Sadness favorite “No Hard Feelings” for the encore.
