Longtime Daptone Records group The Budos Band will release their EP Frontier’s Edge on July 28 via a new label, Diamond West Records. The New York City-based outfit previewed the record with the otherworldly title track.
Diamond West Records is run by Budos Band guitarist Tom Brenneck and saxophonist Jared Tankel. The group split amicably with Daptone, as Brenneck attested to.
“It’s just a natural growth,” he said. “We’re going further away from the sound of Daptone and into territory they probably wanted to stay away from.”
The aptly named Frontier’s Edge sees Budos Band flexing their production skills. “We’re a powerhouse in the studio; we can produce ourselves,” Brenneck stated. “I take the helm, but the band, they know what they want.”
“Somehow, we wrote six songs in two days,” drummer Brian Profilio added. “Tom was able to take what we were doing and put it together in a cohesive manner.”
Budos previewed Frontier’s Edge with the title track, an ominous head banger with bone rattling guitar and tejano-flavored horns. It’s Marty Robbins on mescaline. Listen below:
