Watch Beyoncé Honor Tina Turner With Majestic ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ Cover In London

Tina Turner influenced a host of musicians who followed in her footsteps before her death last week at age 83. Beyoncé was one of those musicians as she considered Turner her idol. Over the past two nights Queen Bey saluted the “Queen Of Rock ‘n’ Roll” by performing a reworked version of Tina’s 1966 hit, “River Deep, Mountain High” during her Renaissance tour shows in London.

“River Deep, Mountain High” was written by Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry with producer Phil Spector. Ike & Tina Turner recorded the song as the title track to their 1966 studio album. While Tina’s version was a high-octane barn burner, Beyoncé stripped down the song to its essence. “I want you guys to help me sing one of my favorite songs,” Beyoncé told the crowd at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, the first of five shows at the venue. “We love you, Tina,” Bey added.

Beyoncé previously paid tribute to Tina Turner with a note posted to her website. “My beloved queen. I love you endlessly,” the 41-year-old musician wrote. “I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience. You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done.”

On Monday, Beyoncé premiered her rendition of “River Deep, Mountain High” as the sixth song of the evening to end the “Opening Act” portion of the concert. A second version was performed in the same slot last night.
