Derek Trucks and Ronnie Wood were among the musicians Eric Clapton recruited to take part in last night’s Jeff Beck tribute concert, the first of two held at Royal Albert Hall in London. The Tedeschi Trucks Band and The Rolling Stones guitarists teamed with Clapton and his band at the end of Monday’s first set to honor Jeff Beck, who died in January, by performing “Beck’s Bolero.”
Night one of A Tribute To Jeff Beck saw a star-studded lineup of musicians play 26 songs associated with the influential guitarist. Rod Stewart, Susan Tedeschi, Johnny Depp, Billy Gibbons, Robert Randolph, Joss Stone, John McLaughlin and Kirk Hammett were among others who participated in Monday’s concert. The evening ended with all of the performers loading the stage for the “Going Down” finale.
Eric Clapton’s band backed the guests on most songs last night, while Beck’s bandmates supported others. Clapton, Wood and Trucks were joined by EC band members guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, drummer Sonny Emory, bassist Nathan East and keyboardist Chris Stainton on “Beck’s Bolero.”
The righteous instrumental “Beck’s Bolero” was Beck’s first solo recording. A single was released in 1967 and the track appeared on Beck’s debut album, Truth, the next year. Trucks, Clapton and Eric’s band were already on stage when Slowhand brought out Ronnie Wood to thunderous applause from the capacity crowd.

“Good evening, we’re going to pay a little visit to the ‘Bolero.’ Like only Beck could play it … ‘Beck’s Bolero’ … we’re gonna play it,” Wood told the audience. Derek Trucks played the signature slide riff at the beginning of the song. Wood then performed the second main theme of “Beck’s Bolero.” Emory hit the drum break and then the guitarists powered through the second movement before returning to the head. Trucks then unleashed a fiery solo with Clapton and Wood throwing in otherworldly licks of their own into the mix.
