As previously noted, legendary folk musician Joan Baez made a surprise appearance on Saturday at the eighth annual Acoustic-4-A-Cure benefit concert hosted by Sammy Hagar and Bob Weir at The Fillmore in San Francisco. The 82-year-old Baez had not performed in public since 2019 and brought out Weir during her set while performing a Bob Dylan cover.

In addition to Baez’s surprise set, Acoustic-4-A-Cure performers included Hagar, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros, Taj Mahal, Chris Isaak and Nancy Wilson. Baez’s four-song set saw her playing acoustic guitar while accompanied by percussionist Gabriel Harris.

Weir was called to The Fillmore stage by Baez while she was performing Dylan’s “Seven Curses.” Recorded in 1963 during sessions for The Times They Are A-Changin’, Dylan’s “Seven Curses” derives from the traditional folk songs “The Maid Freed from the Gallows” and “The Gallows Pole.”

“This is my first performance in four years,” Baez told the crowd according to Riff Magazine’s Acoustic-4-A-Cure recap, adding, “I wanted to see Taj Mahal.”

Baez’s set also featured Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me, Babe” and the traditional “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round,” the latter with the help of Isaak and Wilson. The set also featured “Another World,” which was written by ANOHNI and recorded by Baez for her 2018 album, Whistle Down the Wind. Saturday’s benefit for the Pediatric Cancer Program at UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospital also saw Baez join Isaak for a performance of Delany & Bonnie’s “Never Ending Song of Love.”
