Watch Sammy Hagar + Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Ring ‘In The Midnight Hour’ At Acoustic-4-A-Cure Benefit

A tradition resumed on Saturday at The Fillmore in San Francisco when Sammy Hagar and Bob Weir hosted and performed at the eighth annual Acoustic-4-A-Cure benefit concert. The star-studded fundraiser for the Pediatric Cancer Program at UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospital was last held in 2019 due to the pandemic. In addition to performances from Hagar, Weir, Chris Isaak, Nancy Wilson and Taj Mahal, Acoustic-4-A-Cure also featured a surprise appearance and set by Joan Baez.

Sammy Hagar kicked off the night with a set before Heart’s Nancy Wilson took the stage. Both Weir and Hagar contributed to her rendition of “Even It Up” from Heart’s 1980 album, Bébé le Strange. Fellow announced Acoustic-4-A-Cure performers Vic Johnson and Michael Anthony made their first appearances of the night during Nancy’s set. Next came a a four-song frame from Isaak that saw Weir and bassist Don Was add to “Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing.” Then, Joan Baez shocked the crowd when she emerged from Isaak’s set-closing cover of Delaney & Bonnie’s “Never Ending Song Of Love.”

“This is my first performance in four years,” Baez, who retired from touring in 2019, told the crowd according to Riff Magazine’s report. “I wanted to see Taj Mahal.” She then played a four-song set with Gabriel Harris on percussion before Taj Mahal took the stage for a five-song performance of his own.

The original Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros trio of Weir, Was and drummer Jay Lane played the last set of the night on Saturday. Weir & Wolf Bros devoted the bulk of their performance to a “Josephine” sequence that encapsulated “The Other One” and “Dark Star.” Hagar came out to join the three-piece on Grateful Dead classic “One More Saturday Night” and Wilson Pickett’s 1965 hit “In The Midnight Hour.” The evening’s participants then joined forces for an encore of the Dead’s “Loose Lucy” and an a capella version of Hagar’s “Cabo Wabo.”
