Dead & Company returned to The Pavilion at Star Lake near Pittsburgh on Monday night as part of their Final Tour. The setlist included a few tour debuts and other rarely-played songs. There was also a special representation of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia onstage with the band for the duration of the show.

The Skinny: Dead & Company is brought to you by Section 119. Check out their Reactive Swim Trunks that show a pattern when they get wet! These swim trunks feature an elastic waist, are made from recycled plastic bottles, are quick drying and have a mesh brief liner and classic fit. Subtle or loud, these swim trunks can be worn proud.

Guitarists Bob Weir and John Mayer, drummers drummer Mickey Hart and Jay Lane, bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti eased into the start of the show, jamming their way into the opening “Hell In A Bucket.”

The two-slot was given to “Alabama Getaway,” a song written by lyricist Robert Hunter and Garcia. Throughout the show, Weir wore a t-shirt depicting an image of Garcia.

A slow-burning “Jack Straw” came next, giving rise to a concise jam, which gave way to the bluesy boogie of “Big Boss Man.” Weir switched to an acoustic guitar ahead of helming the well-worn “Peggy-O.” Both “Big Boss Man” and “Peggy-O” were making their first appearances on this tour.

A one-two punch of “Bertha” into “Cassidy” produced the liveliest and most interesting aspects of the first set. Big hits inside an energized “Bertha” drew big cheers from the audience. “Cassidy” meanwhile was infused with the jazz-fusion-esque feel many of their recent jams have taken on, marked by Weir’s signature vamping, Chimenti’s skillful keyboard work, Burbridge’s nimble bass runs and the drummer’s shape-shifting patterns.

“Don’t Ease Me In,” the country blues song the Grateful Dead released as their first single in 1966, put a charge into the audience at Star Lake to carry them into set break.

Picking right back up with more country blues originating in the 1920s, the band returned from set break and kicked off the second set with “Viola Lee Blues.” Subject to plenty of online debate from various supporters and detractors, Dead & Company’s tendency to drastically slow down the pace of songs was certainly evident with the pacing of Monday night’s “Viola Lee Blues.” The loping delivery set up a laid-back blues jam that twisted and turned its way around before landing on “Truckin’.”

Set Two Preview

Another example of D&C tempering the pace, “Truckin’” gave Weir some fits with the lyrics but he pulled through after working the curse word “Fucking” into his vocal delivery.. Another rather concise jam also emerged out of “Truckin’,” dissolving before ever fully taking off. Burbridge was then tapped to sing lead on the tour debut of the beloved, rarely played Garcia/Hunter ballad “China Doll.” The gorgeous From The Mars Hotel standout had not been played by D&C since last summer.

“China Doll” was followed by “China Cat Sunflower” and an expressive segue into its often paired partner “I Know You Rider.” Dead & Co. The familiar choogle materialized within the drawn-out transition between “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” as Lane and Hart kept a galloping shuffle going and the others on stage played around with various passages through the “Rider” main theme.

Hart and Lane were then left alone, and after a brief discussion of strategy, initiated the set’s “Drums” jam. Burbridge was soon back among the musicians banging out polyrhythms on the many percussive instruments they had to choose from. “Drums” maintained a primal, analog feel with electronically generated sounds sprinkled in. An extensive devotion to drone came when Hart completed the percussion jam on The Beam, bowing the stringed instrument for added dramatic effect.

An atmospheric start to “Space” aptly initiated the free-form improvisation as ambient notes were played by Mayer, Weir and Chimenti with Burbridge pulsating underneath. The band stayed in the sparse, far-out realm throughout “Space.” Mayer counted out “Althea,” the third selection off the Dead’s 1980 album Go To Heaven to make Monday’s setlist, and the song once again proved to be a showcase for the guitarist.

The Star Lake audience was then treated to Weir leading a tender offering of “Standing On The Moon.” The audience participated in the closer, responding in typical fashion to the infectious “Not Fade Away” refrain. Weir, Mayer, Chimenti and Burbridge swapped verses on a cover of The Band’s “The Weight,” which was played as the show’s encore.

Dead & Company’s Final Tour continues on Wednesday at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in St. Louis. Purchase livestreams for the St. Louis show and all The Final Tour concerts via nugs.net.
