Dead & Company played their final show in New York City on Thursday at the home of the Mets, Citi Field, in Queens. After a bluesy first set the band turned in a more jazz-tinged second frame including a bust out of a Miles Davis classic and a heartfelt farewell encore.

D&C kicked off the first set with one of guitarist Bob Weir’s signature songs, “Feel Like A Stranger.” After Bobby led the way through the first two verses, the band jumped into a quick groove with guitarist and Connecticut native John Mayer — whose back issues seemed to have at least subsided after he had to sit in a chair the previous night — wearing a Mets shirt and filling Citi Field with auto wah and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti washing the stadium in synth. Oteil Burbridge had some percolating basslines in store as drummers Mickey Hart and Jay Lane locked in the groove. Bobby let the NYC audience know it was gonna be a” long, crazy night” ahead of the song’s conclusion.

The sextet then headed into a jubilant “Franklin’s Tower,” with Mayer handling lead vocals. The tune saw turns from both John and Jeff, with the latter rocking a crunchy Hammond B3 organ tone and bringing things to a rolling boil. The “four winds” carried the band home before they slid into Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” which boasted snappy licks from Mayer and a honky-tonk piano from Chimenti who egged each other on before Bobby rode the rails home.

Mayer then manned “Alabama Getaway” and had some Chuck Berry riffage up his sleeve for the Go To Heaven classic. Jeff brought some more Hammond fireworks before John reeled off the bluesy riff of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” Mayer torched his final solo with a wailing affair that led the sextet into “Fantasy’s” companion “Hey Jude Reprise” with the guitarist continuing to shred over the Beatles nod.

Next, the six-piece jammed their way into “Truckin,” and the New York crowd wouldn’t leave them alone as Bobby mentioned the Big Apple. The Grateful Dead staple saw John showing off more of his bluesy chops with Oteil getting into the groove and showcasing a strutting bassline. From “Truckin’” emerged “Deal,” with Mayer handling lead vocals. The band extended their blues streak with Chimenti continuing to shine on the Hammond and John blasting off to put an exclamation point on the first frame.

Dead & Company launched the second set with “Scarlet Begonias,” featuring Weir on lead vocals. Although he struggled a bit with some of the early high notes, it only seemed to strengthen his resolve and he ended up showcasing some of that classic Bobby showmanship on the mic. The band floated through a fluid jam that led them into “Scarlet’s” longtime Grateful Dead companion, “Fire On The Mountain,” just the second such D&C pairing of the tour since their opener at Barton Hall. Oteil dropped the band into the Shakedown Street cut with its familiar bassline and delivered his typically beatific vocal performance on the song composed by Mickey Hart. Mayer served up a spicy repeating auto-wah soaked riff that led Burbridge back into the final verse.

Second Set Preview

The sextet continued with the Weir/Barlow epic “Estimated Prophet.” After Bobby captained the first verse, John flowed through another fluttering auto-wah-laced affair with the band building powerfully around him before Bobby’s time came once again for the second verse. The second jam saw the band exploring a vibey groove with rapid-fire, jazz-tinged runs from John. “Estimated” then melted into “Eyes Of The World,” sung by Weir. Mayer took the first ride while Chimenti delivered sparkling, jazzy piano on the second. Oteil continued the jazz motif with a smooth solo following the third chorus accompanied by vocal stylings from the bassist. The band linked up on an “Eyes” referencing rif to conclude the song.

“Drums” emerged from the Wake Of The Flood jam vehicle, with Mickey, Jay and Oteil all getting in on the fun featuring steel drum vibes before the percussive segment went full drum circle. Mickey then took his turn at The Beam, which began as a shimmering affair before taking on a more ominous drone direction with Hart working the bow and the bar. The band then returned, slipping through a twinkling “Space” and on into the biggest bust out of the evening, Miles Davis’ “All Blues,” last played nearly a year to the day on June 24, 2022.

D&C then kicked things up a notch with a rollicking “Cumberland Blues,” which saw Mayer peeling off countrified licks and Chimenti on the barroom piano. Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” followed as Bobby exhibited a strong vocal performance and Mayer howled on guitar and Jeff growled on the organ.

D&C then delivered the beloved Bonnie Dobson tune, “Morning Dew.” The sextet offered a characteristically dynamic performance of the classic Dead cover, slow-boiling the song before Mayer tore into the final solo to seal the second set. Dead & Company returned to say fare you well to New York City with a beautiful “Brokedown Palace” encore.
