Bob Dylan concluded a two-night stand at Noches del Botánico in Madrid, Spain on Thursday, June 8 last week. Audio of Bob dusting off “Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum” for the first time since 2015 recently surfaced on YouTube.
Bob Dylan and his band — guitarists Bob Britt and Doug Lancio, bassist Tony Garnier, drummer Jerry Pentecost and multi-instrumentalist Donnie Herron — are currently touring around the 2020 double LP, Rough and Rowdy Ways, Bob’s first album of original music since 2012’s Tempest. The Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour ironically marked the end of Dylan’s Never Ending Tour, which lasted over 30 years up until the pandemic pause.
The legendary singer-songwriter has pretty much stuck to the same setlist for the Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour, opening with the 1971 single, “Watching The River Flow.” The setlist naturally features a healthy dose of Rough and Rowdy Ways including singles “I Contain Multitudes” and “False Prophet.” Bob also peppers in older classics like Blonde On Blonde’s “Most Likely You Go Your Way and I’ll Go Mine,” “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and “Gotta Serve Somebody.”
Dylan has had a few tricks up his sleeve on the Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour. A prime example would be his recent inclusion of Grateful Dead songs in Japan. In Madrid, Bob subbed in “Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum” after Rough and Rowdy Ways’ “I’ve Made Up My Mind to Give Myself to You” in the 14th song slot. Bob has pretty much dedicated the spot to setlist variations but it has also been filled by a cover of Johnny Mercer’s “That Old Black Magic.”
“Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum” openes up Dylan’s 2001 album, Love and Theft, which followed his multiple Grammy-winning comeback album Time Out Of Mind. Bob last played “Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum” on July 16, 2015 in Lörrach, Germany. The Madrid version was a little more rock ‘n’ roll then the studio version and saw Dylan on piano, Herron on violin, Britt on electric guitar and Lancio on acoustic guitar as Garnier and Pentecost held down the rhythm section.
