A new era started for Gov’t Mule on Friday in Jacksonville, Oregon as the quartet played their first show since announcing the departure of bassist Jorgen Carlsson. Kevin Scott was on bass at Britt Festival Pavilion for the band’s tour opener, which saw guitarist Jeff Pevar guest for two covers at the end of the night.
“Getting to opportunity to play bass with Gov’t Mule is an honor,” Kevin Scott explained to Live For Live Music. “I have been a huge fan since I was in my early 20s. Mule is one of the rare bands that have amazing songs and that can also stretch/improvise at any moment. I’m very excited for the future—to develop my own take on the catalog [while] also taking HUGE inspiration from Woody, Andy, and Jorgen’s amazing bass work over the years.” No reason for Mule parting ways with Carlsson was mentioned in an announcement that initially stated Scott would join the band for their summer tour but was updated to remove the part specifying “summer tour.”
Scott, frontman/guitarist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis kicked off the tour and concert with The Staple Singers’ “Hammer & Nails,” a frequent opener for the band. The quartet then paired “Rocking Horse” and “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” before taking on the Tom Waits classic “Get Behind The Mule.” Next up was “Dreaming Out Loud” and “Same As It Ever Was” off the forthcoming Gov’t Mule studio album, Peace…Like A River split by a rendition of The J.B.’s “Doing It To Death” that showed off Kevin Scott’s massive talent.
Warren Haynes welcomed Jeff Pevar to the stage after “Same As It Ever Was.” Pevar was a founding member of CPR with the legendary singer-songwriter, guitarist David Crosby and his son keyboardist James Raymond. Crosby continued to call on Pevar for a variety of projects over 30 years including touring with his solo band, in Crosby, Stills & Nash and David Crosby & Friends. Jeff Pevar was also a member of Joe Cocker’s touring band in 1988 at the same time as Danny Louis.
Gov’t Mule and Jeff Pevar honored Cocker with a powerful “The Letter” and Crosby with a stunning “Almost Cut My Hair.” The latter off CSNY’s 1970 album Déjà Vu was the last song Warren Haynes played with David Crosby.
Friday’s second set began with the solemn “Traveling Tune.” Mule then worked Link Wray’s “Rumble” into original “Trane,” which bled into jams on “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” (James Brown), “Eternity’s Breath” (Mahavishnu Orchestra) and “St. Stephen” (Grateful Dead). A double dose of Radiohead followed as the band’s first “Lucky” since January 20, 2020 was followed by their debut performance of Kid A epic “National Anthem.” It was back to originals to end the frame with “Blind Man In The Dark” and “Brand New Angel.” Gov’t Mule punctuated the evening with an “Endless Parade” encore.
