Hometown Heroes: Tedeschi Trucks Band Loads Tour Opener In Jacksonville With Cover Debuts

45

Last year Tedeschi Trucks Band completely revamped their repertoire with material from the excellent four-part I Am The Moon series of albums. However, new covers weren’t rolled out too frequently in 2022. The band kicked off their 2023 Summer Tour last night with a hometown show at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, where they premiered five covers as well as played one that had been shelved for over a decade.

Tedeschi Trucks Band has devoted each of their non-pandemic summers to the Wheels Of Soul Tour since 2015 teaming up with the likes of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Los Lobos, The Wood Brothers, Drive-By Truckers and Blackberry Smoke. This summer, TTB are giving themselves “more flexibility and time for [their] sets” by using a sole opener and putting the Wheels Of Soul moniker on ice. Vincent Neil Emerson opened in Jacksonville and will fill the role for the next four shows as well as the final six dates of the trek. Ziggy Marley will serve as support for the majority of Tedeschi Trucks Band’s 2023 Summer Tour.

Even though the Wheels Of Soul name isn’t in use, the band led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks did continue another tradition last night by launching the summer tour in the couple’s hometown. Eleven members of the group took the stage with Tedeschi strolling out after the group started the show with a debut cover of Joe Cocker’s “Woman To Woman.”

Cocker wrote “Woman To Woman” with Christopher Stainton and initally released the song on his 1972 self-titled album. TTB vocalists Alecia Chakour, Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers took turns singing the song with Susan Tedeschi stepping up from time-to-time to belt out a few lyrics of the tune famously sampled by Tupac on “California Love.” Alecia Chakour’s father, Mitch Chakour, was a longtime member of Joe Cocker’s band.

The opener was followed by a double dose of 2013’s Made Up Mind in “Part Of Me” and “Do I Look Worried.” Derek, Susan and the rest of TTB then played I Am The Moon’s title track before trotting out their take on the Muddy Waters blues classic “Got My Mojo Workin’.” Next up were I Am The Moon cuts “Hear My Dear” and “Fall In” ahead of the band’s recently revived rendition of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Stand Back” and cover of Freddie Hubbard’s “Mr. Clean” that was debuted earlier this year.

Last night’s concert continued with more originals from I Am The Moon as well as the title track off Made Up Mind. The beloved “Midnight In Harlem” was played towards the end of the set and saw Trucks work in a bit of Jeff Beck’s “Nadia.” From there, the TTB dusted off their cover of Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “I Feel So Bad” for the first time since July 10, 2011 as per Setlist.FM’s stats. It was then back to I Am The Moon for “Yes We Will” before “Drums” connected “I Want More” and “Beck’s Bolero” to close the set. While “Beck’s Bolero” was a TTB debut, Derek Trucks performed the instrumental with Eric Clapton and Ronnie Wood at a pair of Jeff Beck tribute concerts in London last month.

The show and the cover debuts weren’t over yet. The Tedeschi Trucks Band unveiled a pair of classic rock favorites to end the night. Up first was a reworking of Wet Willie’s “Keep On Smilin’.” Mattison then handled lead vocals on The Rolling Stones’ “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” to punctuate the concert.
