King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s third show of a four-night residency at The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee was held on Saturday and saw the band dressed in drag in defiance of the state’s recently passed law targeting “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest, or similar entertainers.” Hours before the show, U.S. District Judge Thomas Parker overturned the controversial legislation, calling the bill “both unconstitutionally vague and substantially overbroad.”
“That fucking bullshit bloody bill that they’re trying to pass in this state,” guitarist Joey Walker told The Caverns audience, “we woke up today, fortuitously, to see that a federal judge, who Donald Trump actually put there, said that it’s a fucking bullshit thing. So this ain’t no protest baby, it’s a celebration! Express yourself!”

Walker and his fellow bandmates wore clothing and other accessories typically associated with the female gender throughout their performance on The Caverns amphitheater stage. The band also sold limited edition enamel pins with proceeds going toward the ACLU’s TRANScend Tennessee program.
Saturday’s concert continued the Aussie psych-rockers’ trend of debuting new material as “Witchcraft” made its public premiere. The song appears on the forthcoming King Gizz album PetroDragonic Apocalypse; Or, Dawn Of Eternal Night: An Annihilation Of Planet Earth And The Beginning Of Merciless Damnation, which arrives on June 16.
