King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Kick Off Hollywood Bowl Marathon Set With Rarities Dedicated To Broderick Smith

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard closed out their 2023 North American Tour on Wednesday with one of their signature three hour marathon sets at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The Australian rockers kicked off the concert with four rarities from the band’s 2013 spaghetti western-inspired album Eyes Like the Sky.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s second studio album in their vast catalog, Eyes Like The Sky features spoken word written and narrated by Broderick Smith, father of King Gizzard’s Ambrose Kenny-Smith. Broderick was a renowned musician and actor who performed in a number of Australian bands including Sundown, Carson and the Dingoes and also acted in a 1973 Australian stage version of THe Who’s rock opera Tommy among other artistic endeavors. Broderick Smith sadly died on April 30, 2023.

King Gizzard & The Lizard launched their marathon set at the Hollywood Bowl with four songs off Eyes Like The Sky all dedicated to Broderick Smith beginning with just the third live performance of the LP opener and title track, last played on December 1, 2018. The band then delivered the second and third cut on the record, “Year Of Your Lord” (second live performance) and “The Raid” (fourth live performance) — both last played on December 1, 2018 as well. King Gizz then offered the fourth play of Eyes Like The Sky’s fifth track, “Evil Man,” last played on February 18, 2016.

The marathon set continued with the Flying Microtonal Banana favorite “Rattlesnake” ahead of “Pleura” from the 2021 album L.W. The band then got into their thrash material beginning with Omnium Gatherum cut “Gaia” within which they sandwiched “Gila Monster” from their recently released album PetroDragonic Apocalypse followed by the LP’s “Supercell” and “Witchcraft.” The band kept up the thrash with “Organ Farner” off 2019’s Infest The Rats Nest.

KGLW then coupled Polygondwanaland’s “Crumbling Castle” and “The Fourth Color.” Next, one of the band’s forays into hip-hop, “The Grim Reaper,” fittingly saw quotes from Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic Planetary.” “Reaper” was followed by it’s Omnium Gatherum companion “Magenta Mountain.” Gumboot Soup’s “Down The Sink” then prefaced “Astroturf” from the band’s final of five albums released in 2022, Changes, and included an extended drum solo from Michael Cavanagh followed by Butterfly 3000 favorite “Shanghai,” which saw guitarists Stu Mackenzie and Joey Walker manning their electronic stations.

Next, Cook Craig handled lead vocals on his Omnium Gatherum co-write “The Garden Goblin” before Walker led the way on the album’s “Ambergris.” The band then paired up “Iron Lung” and “Hypertension” ahead of “Magma.” King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard concluded the marathon set and 2023 North American Tour with the Omnium Gatherum epic “The Dripping Tap.”
