Northeast neo-soul sonic healers Lake Street Dive have graced fans with another cover, this time taking on “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. The rendition of the song made famous by Elvis Presley on 1961’s Blue Hawaii features guest vocalist Monica Martin and arrives alongside a fresh batch of 18 tour dates.
Lake Street Dive’s cover creeps in with palm-muted bass notes before Martin’s smoky vocals deliver the iconic opening line, “Wise men say / Only fools rush in.” Of course, LSD has no shortage of captivating singers, but Rachel Price, Bridget Kearney, and Akie Bermiss all step aside and provide support for Martin, coming together to form a chorus in a closing vocal crescendo. Musically, the Boston band gives Elvis’ arrangement an update for the modern age, with understated guitar swoons from James Cornelison giving the cover a contemporary feel.
“We worked up this acoustic, intimate arrangement while on the road with Monica for the last Gather Round Sounds Tour and played it each night,” the band wrote of the cover. “We wanted the recording to feel just as intimate, so all six of us were completely live in one room with no headphones. You can hear every little breath and the closeness of Monica and Rachael and Akie singing together. It was a joy to perform!”
Lake Street Dive has a rich history of covers, with the band first finding viral fame over a decade ago with a street corner take on The Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back“. The group went on to release a collection of covers, Fun Machine, in 2012, and ten years later revisited the concept with Fun Machine: The Sequel. Meanwhile, the band’s tradition of Halloween covers has allowed Lake Street Dive to pay tribute to everyone from The Traveling Wilburys to Hall & Oates, The Beatles, Queen, and more.
Along with the single, Lake Street Dive announced an 18-date extension of the Gather Round Sounds Tour. The run of “semi-acoustic” concerts will resume October 24th in Walkes-Barre, PA and wind through the Southeast and Midwest—including a Halloween show in Orlando—before culminating on November 17th in Dallas. An artist pre-sale begins Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time with the password GATHERROUND. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday. See below for a full list of tour dates.
