Lauryn Hill Turns Roots Picnic Set Into Fugees Reunion

Ms. Lauryn Hill headlined this weekend’s Roots Picnic in Philadelphia with a performance on Saturday celebrating the 25th anniversary of the hip-hop icon’s solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hill’s set at TD Pavilion at the Mann ended with a reunion of the Fugees as her bandmates Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel came out for an extended collaboration.

The Fugees reunited in 2021 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their 1996 album, The Score. The group played just one concert before twice canceling the brief run of shows citing COVID-19 and other complicating factors.

The future of The Fugees was further thrown into turmoil in April when Michel was convicted in a federal campaign finance case. According to The New York Times, Michel “faces a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison.”

“This is 25 years of Miseducation,” Hill said. “But, ironically, funny enough, there was another 25th-anniversary celebration that we intended to celebrate but we didn’t get to because of COVID. So what I did, was I decided to bring some friends out with me.”

Jean and Michel then came out to join Hill on several of The Fugees’ favorites off The Score, offering a bit of the title track, followed by “How Many Mics,” “Zealots,” “Ready or Not,” “Killing Me Softly” and “Fu-Gee-La.”
