Stanley Mouse is among what’s known as the “Big Five” of psychedelic poster artists of the 1960s including Wes Wilson, Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso and Alton Kelley. Read an excerpt from The JamBase Concert Poster Primer: Part 1 – The Rise of Concert Poster Art:

Moscoso, Mouse, Kelley, Griffin and Wilson are collectively known as the “Big Five.” Along with Bonnie MacLean, these artists — just as much as the great San Francisco bands like the Dead and Airplane — were at the forefront of ushering in an artistic revolution that became a cultural revolution, firmly establishing a counterculture. It’s no coincidence that the Summer Of Love took place in 1967 when these artists were at the height of their powers.

Mouse and Kelley worked closely together for concert promoting outfits like Family Dog and Bill Graham Presents. Mouse played a huge role in establishing modern psychedlia and helped bands like the Grateful Dead establish their aesthetic, creating the group’s iconic “Skull & Roses” or “Skeleton & Roses” poster. Mouse has continued to be a hugely influential figure in the poster art world and beyond for the past six decades.
