The String Cheese Incident will release Lend Me A Hand, their first new studio album in six years, on September 8 through their SCI Fidelity Records label. The band previewed the forthcoming release by sharing the title track lead single.
The new record was developed after the untimely death of a longtime member of the band’s management team Jesse Aratow. According to press materials, the follow-up to their 2017 Jerry Harrison-produced Believe sees the band departing from “genre-hopping for a stripped-back form of folk-rock.”
SCI guitarist Bill Nershi, mandolinist/guitarist/violinist Michael Kang, bassist Keith Moseley, drummer Michael Travis, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth and percussionist Jason Hann recorded the 11-song LP with producer/multi-instrumentalist Brad Cook at their The Lab studio in Boulder, Colorado.
“As a six-headed band with so many instruments and so many notes flying around, working with Brad really showed us that less is more,” Hollingsworth said. “It felt good to make something more organic, rather than working with a lot of synths and drum machines and putting out something very produced.”
“Rather than trying to be flashy with the musicianship, our goal was to make sure nothing got in the way of the lyrics,” Nershi added. “So even though we’re still a jam band at heart, all these songs can really stand on their own. The whole process was so fun and relaxed, with a feeling of playfulness that we all really enjoyed. Brad didn’t let us get caught up in overthinking or agonizing over certain parts—we just kept it loose and kept the flow going.”
Moseley further detailed the band’s approach to creating their eighth studio album:
“Every album’s a snapshot of the band at that moment, and this record turned out to be one of our most introspective. We were coming out of the pandemic and coming up on our anniversary; we’d lost someone who’s been an important part of our team for so long. All those thoughts and feelings coalesced into something that’s much more focused on the storytelling, and feels more like hanging out in the living room with us while we sing you some songs.
“It’ll be fun to see how some of these three- or four-minute tunes open up and stretch out a bit. One of the things that’s helped us stay connected over the years is that shared love for the beauty of the creative process—we’re all still completely engaged in the pursuit of making the best music we can make, then giving the best live performance we can. If I had to guess, I’d say that the next album we put out will be 180 degrees from this one, because that’s how things tend to go with us. We just point the ship into the wind and head off onto the next adventure, whatever that might be.”
“Lend Me A Hand” made its live debut on December 30, 2021 during SCI’s show at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre and has been played several additional times. The title track remains the only song to enter the band’s live repertoire, though they have jammed on what became the album track, “Enjoy The Ride.”
