Bob Dylan‘s Rough And Rowdy Ways World Wide Tour moved on to Lyon, France last night for the first of two shows at L’Amphitheatre. Dylan’s concert included a cover of the Grateful Dead‘s “West L.A. Fadeaway” he had dusted off on Tuesday in Aix-en-Provence. A crispy audience recording has surfaced, giving fans a chance to hear Bob’s new arrangement of the In The Dark classic.
“West L.A. Fadeaway” is the latest in a string of Grateful Dead songs trotted out by Dylan since an April run through Japan. “Truckin’”, “Stella Blue” and “Brokedown Palace” are among other Dead tunes played at Bob Dylan shows over the past three months.
Why has Bob Dylan started rolling out Grateful Dead songs at his concerts in Japan and Europe? Dead & Company/Bob Weir manager Matt Busch recently spoke about the trend during an appearance on wook+live. Busch hung with Bob Dylan’s manager at the Willie Nelson 90th birthday concerts at the Hollywood Bowl after Bob’s tour of Japan. “Even he can’t explain to me what’s going in Dylan’s mind with all those Grateful Dead covers,” Matt Busch exclaimed. “[Bob Dylan’s manager] was excited by it because a. he loves those tunes and b. he knows the Grateful Dead has never played Japan nor will they.”
Dylan hadn’t performed “West L.A. Fadeaway” at one of his own sets since November 10, 1999 until the visit to Aix-en-Provence on Tuesday. Now, Bob and his band — bassist Tony Garnier, drummer Jerry Pentecost, guitarist Bob Britt, multi-instrumentalist Donnie Herron and guitarist Doug Lancio — have played the Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia-penned song twice in the past three nights. Last night’s version came in the 14-slot just as it did on Tuesday in Aix-en-Provence.
Bob Dylan sounded in great voice as he fronted his ensemble on “West L.A.” in Lyon. Dylan did not sing the missing “Here’s what Ginger says …” verse found in early Dead versions of the tune. The iconic artist was on piano for the Grateful Dead cover and pounded out a tasty run on the keys after a powerful guitar solo from Doug Lancio.
