Minnesota Twins Pitcher Joe Ryan & Grateful Dead Launch Apparel Collaboration

Deadheads are everywhere, even on the roster of Major League Baseball team the Minnesota Twins. Pitcher Joe Ryan, who takes the mound at Target Field to the soundtrack of “Fire On The Mountain,” has partnered with the Grateful Dead and apparel company HOMAGE to launch a new line of three T-shirts.

Joe Ryan grew up in California’s Marin County, the same area various members of the Grateful Dead call home. Ryan’s uncle worked for Jerry Garcia and his father nearly ran over the guitarist. Jerry had just left a car dealership after purchasing a new BMW when the motor failed as he was driving up the hill on a freeway. Garcia got out of his automobile and stood in the middle of the freeway trying to find help. Joe Ryan’s dad was “Truckin’” over the hill and had to swerve around Jerry to miss him.

The apparel line marks the first athelete collaboration featuring Grateful Dead imagery for HOMAGE. However, the band did famously help sponor Lithuania’s national basketball team at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Joe Ryan worked closely with HOMAGE to develop the designs for the t-shirts. “We wanted to create a way for Joe to pay homage to, of course, his love for the Grateful Dead,” Matt Schultz, the director of brand partnerships and social media at HOMAGE, told MLB.com. “But it’s also a way for him to pay homage to his family, to where he comes from, and really what makes him who he is, as a player.”

The starter, who limited the Boston Red Sox to a mere three hits and no earned runs over nine innings last Thursday, June 22, also fit his passion for surfing and home community into one of the designs. The blue T-shirt features a skeleton surfing on a lightning surfboard in front of the Bay Area’s Mount Tamalapis.

“It was awesome, a surprise,” Ryan mentioned to MLB.com of collaborating with HOMAGE and the Grateful Dead. “It’s kind of cool that it lines up with the last tour for [ Dead & Company ], and just excited to be a part of that in some small way.”

Joe Ryan isn’t alone in his Grateful Dead fandom on the Twins. Manager Rocco Baldelli loves both the Dead and Phish.
