Neil Young & Crazy Horse Share Previously Unreleased Version Of ‘Box Car’

Neil Young shared a previously unreleased version of “Box Car.” The outtake from Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s sessions for 1990’s Ragged Glory previews the forthcoming fifth installment in the Neil Young Official Release Series, set to arrive in CD and vinyl formats on July 28.

The Official Release Series #5 traces the period between 1989 and 1991. The characteristically prolific era is highlighted by two of Neil Young’s landmark albums, 1989’s Freedom — which contains the anthem “Rockin’ In The Free World” — and Ragged Glory. The collection also includes Ragged Glory’s live companion, 1991’s Weld, and the experimental record Arc.

The Ragged Glory portion of the Official Release Series # 5, however, is where the rare and previously unreleased material lies. Dubbed “Smell The Horse”, the discs contain the original album along with two rare cuts, “Interstate” and “Don’t Spook The Horse,” which were b-sides to singles. It also contains previously unreleased versions of “Born To Run” — clocking in at 12 minutes — and the aforementioned “Box Car.”

While demoed in the 1990 Ragged Glory sessions, “Box Car” wouldn’t appear on an album until 2007’s Chrome Dreams II. Listen to the previously unreleased Ragged Glory outtake below:
