After over a month together on the road, playing 20 shows together in 14 states and the District of Columbia, The Wood Brothers and Shovels & Rope brought their joint “Shovels & Wood” tour to a close last week in Grand Rapids, MI.
The concert at Frederick Meijer Gardens on June 18th saw the roots contemporaries mine their respective songbooks for a celebration of the current state of Americana. For their set, The Wood Brothers dug into their latest studio album, Heart is the Hero, playing new favorites “Pilgrim”, “Line Those Pockets”, “Worst Pain of All”, and more. The 18-song set also paid attention to the long-running trio’s stable of hits and included the lauded movement of “Happiness Jones” into Charles Wright‘s classic “Express Yourself” back into “Happiness Jones”.

One of the highlights of the Wood Brothers/Shovels & Rope tour has been nightly onstage collaborations between the acts. Toward the end of the show, Chris and Oliver Wood along with honorary sibling Jano Rix brought out Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst one last time. Together, they honored the late Tom Petty with a cover of the classic “Yer Bad”, a staple collaboration of the tour. Previous covers from throughout the trek have included John Prine‘s “That’s The Way That The World Goes ‘Round”, Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s “Down On The Corner”, and more.
