Old pals moe. and Umphrey’s McGee teamed up for the first of two joint concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Friday. moe. brought out UM guitarist Jake Cinninger to guest on “Happy Hour Hero” during their lengthy set at the buocolic Morrison, Colorado venue before Umphrey’s took the stage for a full show that included a collaborative “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” cover.

Friday’s concert came just weeks after the two perennial Summer Camp Music Festival co-headliners joined forces for a set and encore at what is expected to the event’s last installment in its usual form for at least the foreseeable future. moe. opened last night’s festivities with the beloved “Buster” and followed with oldie “Spaz Medicine” ahead of the aforementioned “Happy Hour Hero.”

Ever since moe. debuted the Rob Derhak-penned “Happy Hour Hero” in 1995, the song has been used to showcase the talents of special guests. While a horn section and keyboardist John Carroll added to the studio version found on the 1998 moe. album Tin Cans & Car Tires, live versions have seen the band joined by the likes of Peter Frampton, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, members of Turkuaz, Kyle Hollingsworth, John Medeski, Jeff Austin, Ivan Neville, Allie Kral, Joe Bonamassa, Karl Denson, Mike Dillon, Lo Faber, Marco Benevento, DJ Logic and endless others. Additionally, the song has been covered by local and regional acts including the Jed Luckless Band, Funktional Flow, Soulnar, The Freshtones, Formula Five, The Soggie Monsters, The Miller Street Groove and Far From Ordinary.

Last night’s “Happy Hour Hero” spanned over 15 minutes. moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey utilized his talk-box for the first solo. The band’s newest member, keyboardist Nate Wilson, then laid into the organ to get a rise from the Red Rocks crowd. Next, it was Cinninger’s turn to shine and he unleashed a series of metal-tinged licks in his signature style. He kept shredding as Derhak sang the final verse. moe.’s Al Schnier got in on the action by engaging Cinninger in a call-and-response segment.

Schnier and Cinninger went full blast propelled by drummer Vinnie Amico picking up the tempo. moe. and their guest then laid off a bit and embarked on a jam that would eventually lead into “Seat Of My Pants.” Jake left the stage after “SOMP” began. The Al-written tune was followed by frequent partner “Sensory Deprivation Bank.” Next, moe. debuted a cover of Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way” helmed by Nate Wilson and linked their own “Billy Goat” with the Blind Melon classic “No Rain.” Anthony “Zee” Donaldson emerged wearing a bee costume a la Blind Melon’s iconic video for the song. moe. wrapped the frame with “Tailspin.”

Umphrey’s began their first of two sets with instrumental intro “Nipple Trix” paving the way for “1348.” The band fit in plenty of jam vehicles on Friday including “In The Kitchen,” “Bridgeless,” “Ocean Billy” and “Wife Soup.” Members of moe. contributed to UM’s first cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” since November 11, 2021 with Amico and percussionist Jim Loughlin banging on the hilariously oversized cowbell introduced during “Don’t Fear The Reaper” at Summer Camp last month. Additionally, Umphrey’s busted out “Triangle Tear” after 202 shows on the shelf and ended the night with an “All In Time” encore.
