See Beck & The Black Keys Collaborate On Classics From Their Respective Catalogs In Paris

48

The Black Keys continued their European tour on Sunday with the first concert of a two-night stand at the Zénith in Paris. The band welcomed friend and collaborator Beck during the encore for one of his classics as well as one from the Keys catalog.

The Black Keys opened with “I Got Mine” off their 2008 Danger Mouse-produced record Attack & Release. The band also offered tunes from their latest studio album, 2022’s Dropout Boogie, beginning with “Your Team Is Looking Good” in the third song slot.

The duo dipped heavily, however, from their 2010 album, Brothers, performing roughly one third of the 15-track record including a new arrangement of “Everlasting Light.” Additional favorites from the LP included “Howlin’ For You” and “Tighten Up.”

Following the latter, The Keys rocked out on Dropout Boogie’s “Wild Child” before Brothers’ “She’s Long Gone” and The El Camino sing-along “Little Black Submarines” brought the set to a raccous close. The band returned to welcome Beck for the encore.

In an interview with NME published in April, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney revealed that Beck was “the lynch pin in the new evolution of The Black Keys.” Carney was speaking in regards to Beck’s contributions to The Keys’ forthcoming album, which is expected to arrive in 2024, and which Carney called “our best record for sure.”

The Black Keys and Beck go way back, beginning when Carney passed him a bootleg of The Keys’ 2003 album Thickfreakness at a Saturday Night Live after party. “Who’s going to listen to that shit? Beck did,” Carney recalled. “And he invited us on tour a few weeks later, which was our first big break.”

Beck joined his old friends for the encore of their European tour kickoff in The City of Light, beginning with his Mellow Gold classic, “Loser,” with guitarist Dan Auerbach handling the familiar slide guitar line. Beck would stay on to help Dan sing El Camino’s “Lonely Boy” to cap off the concert.
