With an earlier doors time to ease some of the line congestion experienced on Saturday, many more people were inside the venue by the time the band took the stage at 7:15. The Bob Weir-heavy show began with “Hell in a Bucket,” a great opportunity for the band and crowd alike to settle in for the night.

Guitarist John Mayer opened up “Sugaree” next, weaving together intricate melodies with each note of his patient guitar solos. The crowd was noticeably more excited from the jump last night and let loose loud cheers each time Mayer returned to the verses. Weir fronted the group on the ensuing “Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo,” another display of incredible patience floating in the Rio Grandio. Mayer and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti conversed with each other during the jam — a perfect vibe for a warm summer evening like last night.

First Set Preview

The set moved forward with a high-energy “Mr. Charlie,” Mayer continuing to shine as the clear MVP of the set so far ahead of a slowed-down “Friend of the Devil.” Weir took the lead again on a late-set “Lost Sailor”/“Saint of Circumstance” pairing that saw some excellent playing from the sextet as the crowd responded in kind to the fireworks. We then headed into setbreak on a high note with a rollicking “Big Railroad Blues.”

Drummers Mickey Hart and Jay Lane pounded out the intro to “Samson and Delilah” at the beginning of the second set and were met by a huge roar from the crowd. The concise tune was followed up by “Playing in the Band,” giving us our first foray into jamming. While the improv was relatively short and contained within the usual bounds of “Playing,” it gave Dead and Co. a chance to stretch out and prepare for the more adventurous segments to come later in the set. “Help on the Way” emerged suddenly from the murky jam and had the crowd going wild for the first part of the iconic Dead trifecta. The ensuing “Slipknot!” had exceptional work by bassist Oteil Burbridge as he nimbly navigated the space between Mayer and Chimenti’s leads.

Second Set Preview

“Franklin’s Tower” finished out the pre-Drums segment of the second frame – Chimenti was absolutely the standout of this track and ripped an incredible extended Hammond B3 solo that had many in the crowd screaming with glee.

Mickey’s theme for the “Drums”/“Space” segment last night was water. This immediately became apparent from the rippling sounds emanating from the Beam as him, Burbridge, and Lane beat away at the massive kit. For the second night in a row, Hart had the foundations of SPAC shaking during his solo Beam segment as the sounds of the ocean floor poured from the PA system.

Last night’s improvisational highlight came in the full-band portion of “Space” – specifically, the musical conversation between Burbridge, Chimenti, and Mayer. I use the term “conversation” to describe it due to the incredibly fluid sharing of ideas and melodies between the three musicians. Reaching a major-key space, which has been a trend for recent “Space” jams, D&C gradually melted into “Death Don’t Have No Mercy.” Just like Saturday’s “Days Between,” Weir poured an incredible amount of emotion into the late-set ballad as Chimenti accented and soloed perfectly on the B3.

Weir stayed at the front for “Throwing Stones,” which hinted at an incredibly funky jam for a precious few seconds with Chimenti laying in on clavinet for the only time all weekend – the excitement was short-lived, however, as Weir jumped back in quickly with the final verse of the song. Crowd favorite “Sugar Magnolia” closed out the second set ahead of the tour’s first “Werewolves of London” giving way to “Playin’ Reprise” in the encore.
