King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard capped their three-show residency at Chicago’s Salt Shed on Tuesday night. The performance included the band’s live debut of their sprawling song “Change,” which appeared on their 2022 album, Changes.
The 13-minute studio recording of “Change” dates back to sessions held in 2017. The jazz-tinged, multi-part song took the band several years to complete and even longer to bring to the live stage. Tuesday’s live debut clocked in at around 17 minutes.
“That shit’s fucking hard, fuck,” guitarist Stu Mackenzie said following the debut. “Thank you for coming to our Ted Talk. Our Ted Talk about jazz – and how it’s boring.”
Tuesday’s concert at The Salt Shed began with “Gila Monster” and “Converge” from the band’s album Petrodragonic Apocalypse; Or, Dawn Of Eternal Night: An Annihilation Of Planet Earth And The Beginning Of Merciless Damnation, which arrives this Friday, June 16. The final night of the band’s Chicago residency also saw the first “Plastic Boogie” performed this year.
King Gizzard’s 2023 US Residency Tour continues on Friday with the first of three shows in Carnation, Washington. The nugs.net King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Livestream Marathon is available featuring premieres of official video from each of the tour’s four residencies.
