Ticketmaster, Live Nation and SeatGeek have agreed to committ to “upfront, all-in pricing” for online tickets sales, as per Reuters. President Joe Biden brokered the deal as part of an effort to “crack down on so-called junk fees.”
Biden held a meeting at The White House Thursday with members of ticketing companies Ticketmaster, LiveNation and SeatGeek. The meeting also included representatives from Airbnb, highlighting Biden’s wider scope in regulating “junk fees,” or fees tacked on at the end of an online purchase. As per the agreement, those fees must be disclosed upfront or incorporated into the overall advertised price.
Ticketmaster’s parent company LiveNation has committed to unveil upfront all-in pricing in September, “showing just one total price for more than 30 million fans who attend shows at the more than 200 Live Nation-owned venues and festivals across the country,” as per the report. Seatgeek — a primary and secondary market ticketing site — also committed “to make it easier for its millions of customers to shop on the basis of all-in price.”
But even as Biden said, “There’s more to do to address the problem of online ticketing,” the Break Up Ticketmaster Coalition contended that the deal did not offer a solution to the problem. The coaltion asserted that the breakup of Ticketmaster is necessary to prevent “exorbitant fees on top of the actual ticket, with multiple reports of fees that cost more than a ticket itself.”
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D) emphasized transparency:
“Rather than a voluntary patchwork varying by company, Americans deserve a basic disclosure standard so they can be fully aware of the prices and fees they’re being charged,” Blumenthal said. “The days of padding corporate profits by nickel and diming consumers are numbered.”
