King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard delivered the second of three shows at The Salt Shed in Chicago on Monday as part of their North American residency tour. The Australian rockers dusted off “Invisible Face” for the first time since 2018 about halfway through the set.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard — Stu Mackenzie, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Harwood and Michael Cavanagh — got the concert underway with the favorite “Rattlesnake” (as they did on night two at Red Rocks), which saw the band incorporating elements of “Honey” and “Sleep Drifter” into the 14-minute rendition. The band then flowed into said “Honey,” off their 2020 album K.G., containing a callback to “Rattlesnake” and a tease of “Sleep Drifter.”
The Butterfly 3000 highlight “Shanghai” fell in the third song slot and contained “grow wings and fly” and “let’s get real high” vocal vamps, stretching the song out to over 12 minutes. Next came a pair of songs — “Hate Dancin’” and “Astroturf” — off KGLW’s fifth and final album of 2022, Changes. A song from the sextet’s fifth and final album of 2017, Gumboot Soup’s “Down The Sink,” followed.
The Australian rockers then delivered the first “Invisible Face” since August 20, 2018 in Dresden, Germany for a 111 show gap, as per KGLW.net. The band debuted the Nonagon Infinity cut at The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland on May 9, 2016. From “Invisible Face,” KGLW unleashed its Nonagon Infinity closing companions “Wah Wah” and “Road Train.” All told, the Nonagon Infinity segment beginning with the bust out of “Invisible Face” clocked in at around 16 minutes. “Ice V” — the lead single from the band’s 2022 album Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava — capped the four-song seamless sequence

The band then embarked on a Polygondwanaland segment that included “Inner Cell,” “Loyalty” and “Horology.” Gizz finally got into material off their imminent album — PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation — which arrives Friday, June 16, with the mighty “Supercell.” “Self-Immolate,” off PetroDragonic Apocalypse’s thrashy older cousin, 2019’s Infest The Rats Nest, followed and boasted a drum solo from Cavanagh. Night two in Chicago came to a close with “Am I In Heaven” from 2014’s I’m In Your Mind Fuzz.
