Mike Gordon brought his five-piece solo band to Webster Hall in New York City on Saturday for the third stop of a tour in support of his recently released Flying Games album. The Phish bassist celebrated Father’s Day early by bringing out his daughter, Tessa Gordon, and a three-piece horn section for the evening’s encore.
Gordon, keyboardist Rachel Eckroth, drummer John Kimock, percussionist Craig Myers and guitarist Scott Murawski launched Saturday’s show with Flying Games cuts “Connected,” “Haywire” and “Mull.” Eckroth then led the band through “Circling,” a collaboration between Rachel, Donny McCaslin and Eren Cannata released in 2020. Next came Mike and Scott’s “Say Something” and a cover of Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing” before the quintet returned to Flying Games for a set-closing “Sughn Never Sets.”

Mike Gordon Kicks Off Summer Tour With Several New Songs & Cover Debuts
Phish bassist Mike Gordon embarked on a tour with his solo band on Thursday night and performed several songs live for the first time.
Mike’s band got the second set at Webster Hall underway with “Steps” from 2017’s OGOGO. It was then back to Flying Games for “Revolution of the Mind.” From there Eckroth fronted the group on Rufus & Chaka Khan’s “Ooh I Like Your Loving” before the live debut of Flying Games‘ “Guilty Pleasures.” Another Mike Gordon premiere followed the ensuing “Marissa,” as the bassist led his band on the Trey Anastasio-penned “A Wave Of Hope.” Mike revealed before the song he had called his Phish bandmate to get his blessing to play “another song about flying.”
The second set wrapped up with “Pure Energy” off Flying Games and Overstep standout “Tiny Little World.” When Mike came back for the encore, he told the crowd he would follow a Phish Father’s Day tradition since it was only two hours away from the start of the holiday. “It’s been one of the greatest joys of my life to sing with Tessa,” Gordon continued before bringing out his daughter.
Tessa sang lead on the Mike Gordon debut of Orgone’s “Who Knows Who?” to start the encore. Once the song hit an instrumental break, trumpeter Eric Biondo, saxophonist Lynn Ligammari and bass trumpeter Michael Williams emerged to add to the song. Both Tessa Gordon and the horns also contributed to a cover of BabyJake’s “Funny Thing About Love,” which the young vocalist and her dad performed with Little Stranger at Nectar’s in Burlington last month. Tessa then departed the stage leaving Mike, his band and the horns to close out the night with “Carini.”
