Watch Willie Nelson Welcome Sierra Hull + moe. & Umphrey’s McGee Members At Summer Camp

Willie Nelson returned to the Summer Camp Music Festival on Sunday, May 28 — the final day of the last festival in its current form. The 90-year-old outlaw country legend played an hour-long set featuring guest appearances by mandolinist/vocalist Sierra Hull and members of the festival’s traditional headliners Umphrey’s McGee and moe. Summer Camp has been held each year besides 2020 due to the pandemic, at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Illinois. moe. topped the inaugural lineup with Umphrey’s McGee first signing on in 2003 for the Memorial Day Weekend music festival. On May 16, producer Ian Goldberg announced the 2023 festival would be the last installment of the long-running event. Moving forward, Goldberg revealed his intention to host a “redefined camping and music experience at Three Sisters Park every Memorial Day starting in 2024 that will be presented by Summer Camp.”

Willie Nelson made his Summer Camp debut in 2009. This time around the Red Headed Stranger was joined by a smaller iteration of his Family band featuring such longtime collaborators as his son Lukas Nelson on guitar and vocals and Mickey Raphael on harmonica. moe. guitarists Chuck Garvey and Al Schnier as well as keyboardist Nate Wilson, bassist Rob Derhak, Sierra Hull and UM axemen Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss were brought out by Willie Nelson towards the end of his set for a medley of traditional gospel songs “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” and “I’ll Fly Away.” All six guests were sans instruments as they sang backing vocals.

Sierra Hull stuck around to lend her voice to Willie’s version of the Mac Davis classic “It’s Hard To Be Humble.” The band then played the Abbott, Texas-native off with “I’ll Fly Away” as Nelson threw his hat and other gear into the audience. Willie Nelson delivered a 19-song set at this year’s Summer Camp Music Festival. Nelson & Family loaded the performance with such beloved numbers as “Whiskey River,” “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys,” “On The Road Again” and “Georgia On My Mind.” Lukas Nelson starred on his own “Just Outside Of Austin” and dueted with his father on a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe.”

Despite his age, Willie Nelson isn’t done touring yet. He’ll kick off the 2023 Outlaw Music Festival Tour in Somerset, Wisconsin on June 23. Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros, Margo Price, Gov’t Mule and The Avett Brothers are among the acts taking part in select dates.
