When The Sphere at The Venetian Resort was first announced five years ago, the idea of a building so spectacular that it could outshine every hotel on the Las Vegas Strip seemed like a joke, but the public debut of the venue’s astounding LED exosphere on the Fourth of July proved it to be exactly that.

With all of the entertainment options available in Vegas, competing attractions vie for the attention and dollars of wide-eyed tourists, but the new 18,600-seat auditorium officially announced itself as the biggest and brightest with a magnificent display of its boundary-pushing capabilities. After an initial greeting of “hello world,” The Sphere transformed over and over—shape-shifting from a hyper-realistic Earth to the moon, to trippy underwater scenes and different abstract forms. A giant fluttering flag and virtual fireworks honored the holiday accompanied by real-life pyrotechnics in the background.

“The Exosphere is more than a screen or a billboard – it is living architecture, and unlike anything that exists anywhere in the world,” said Guy Barnett, SVP of Brand Strategy and Creative Development for Sphere Entertainment. “Last night’s show provided a glimpse of the Exosphere’s captivating power, and the possibilities for artists, partners, and brands to create compelling and impactful stories to connect with audiences in new ways.”

The Sphere is set to open this fall and will host traditional Vegas-style residencies but on a grander scale beginning with a 25-date U2 residency running from September through December (head here for tickets). U2 is still the only band so far confirmed to play the venue, but CEO James Dolan was reportedly in talks with Madison Square Garden-favorite jam band Phish about booking a residency.

“It’s a work in progress,” Sphere EVP & COO Rich Claffey told Live For Live Music at the time. “But we’re Madison Square Garden. We talk to everybody.”
