(Deep breath): Phish is headed to Madison Square Garden for seven nights this summer. Just in case that isn’t enough music for you (you’re reading this website, after all), CEG Presents has after-parties and other events lined up within walking distance from the Garden every night that Phish is at MSG from July 28th–August 5th, with multiple shows on some nights. One dollar from every ticket sold will be donated to Phish’s non-profit organization, the WaterWheel Foundation.
The Phish after-party series will kick off on Friday, July 28th with Kendall Street Company at The Cutting Room. The six-piece Charlottesville, VA jam band will hit the stage at 11:55 p.m., just like all of the other after-shows listed below (unless otherwise noted).
Things will get historic on Saturday, July 29th back at The Cutting Room where Allman Brothers Band kin Duane Betts and his band Palmetto Motel will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the record-setting Summer Jam concert in Watkins Glen International Speedway. On July 28th, 1973, an estimated 600,000 fans traveled to Watkins Glen, NY to see the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, and The Band at what became the longtime record-holder for”largest audience at a pop festival.”
Over at Hill Country that same night, Saturday, July 29th, One Time Weekend will perform a free late-night show. From the jam band proving ground of Connecticut, the “shred-funk” quartet abides by the simple mantra, “We Groove – You Move.”
Before Phish hits the stage on Sunday, July 30th, the Cutting Room will host another tribute to Summer Jam with a 2 p.m. pre-party. This robust tribute to the Allmans, the Dead, and The Band will feature dedicated sets from The Allmost Brothers Band, Near Dead Experience, and ALEOproductions performing The Band in another homage to the historic weekend at Watkins Glen.
After Phish plays the Garden on Sunday, July 30th, a different kind of tribute concert is set for Hill Country. Billed as Elton Jawn: Philly Phunk x Elton Dance Party, this late-night will pay tribute to the Rocket Man himself with some Philly funk thrown in, courtesy of a superjam featuring Neal “Fro” Evans (Dopapod), Jeremy Kaplan (Dogs in a Pile), Felix Pastorius, and The Knotty G’s.
Simultaneously, over at The Cutting Room, New York’s own Space Bacon will take over the after-party duties. The burgeoning Brooklynites will pilot a show of space jams that weave through the band’s deep electronic roots and bridge the gap all the way to the precipice of metal.
After Phish gives itself and its fans a much-needed day of rest on Monday, July 31st, the band and CEG are back at it on Tuesday, August 1st. That night, one of New York’s finest Grateful Dead tribute acts, Stella Blue’s Band, will explore the Dead’s 30-year legacy with a show at The Cutting Room and celebrate what would have marked Jerry Garcia‘s 81st birthday. This show is an all-ages event with parent accompaniment.
Meanwhile, back at Hill Country, those seeking a break from the jam band milieu can take in the eclectic pairing of Art Thief and LINKS. The high-energy Art Thief melds an engaging blend of prog and fusion—with a bit of punk thrown in—all inspired by science fiction. LINKS, on the other hand, fully utilizes its deep 11-piece lineup to serve as a “disco funk horn band for the dance vocoder apocalypse.”
On Wednesday, August 2nd, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s bandmates Russ Lawton (drums) and Ray Paczkowski (keyboards) from his eponymous solo band will be in town for a LaMP show with Scott Metzger (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead) at the Cutting Room. The power trio will present a show of distilled instrumental grooves during this rare performance.
That same night, at Hill Country at 11 p.m., Midwestern electro-jam-funk powerhouse DIZGO will present a loving tribute set honoring Gorillaz and Talking Heads billed as a “Talking Diz-Gorillaz” set. In addition to the wide-ranging covers, selections from DIZGO’s original catalog will bridge the gap between these seemingly disparate influences.
After another well-deserved break on Thursday, August 3rd, Perpetual Groove will help fans round the home stretch by providing after-show entertainment at the Cutting Room following Phish’s penultimate MSG show. The long-standing prog-jam fusion act from Athens, GA will mine its catalog that stretches back decades—all the way to the band’s debut Sweet Oblivious Antidote which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2023.
On the final night of Phish’s 2023 Madison Square Garden, Eggy will help close out the week-plus with a bang at the Cutting Room. The 450-person capacity room is quickly becoming too small for the fast-rising jam band from Connecticut, which sold out the room for a Phish late-night during last year’s New Year’s run. The Saturday night farewell party for “the 7” will surely be remembered as an intimate affair as the band continues to graduate to larger venues.
The CEG Phish after-party programming at Hill Country will wrap that same night with an all-ages show at hosted by certified aPhishionados Ari Fink (SiriusXM Phish Radio) and Tad Cautious (The Bunny). While the two talking heads are known for their on-air personalities and encyclopedic knowledge of Phish, at Hill Country they will remind listeners that they are, in fact, DJs with b2b sets of Funk Sauce.
