During a rare break from the sage, Daniel Donato has revealed details for his long-awaited sophomore LP, Reflector. Set to arrive November 10th via Retrace Music, the Nashville guitar firebrand offered the first preview with the lead single, “Lose Your Mind”.
Known in equal parts for his virtuosic guitar playing and his reverence for classic country and Western music, Reflector marks Donato’s first collection of all-original material. The 15-song tracklist is culled from the growing satchel of songs Daniel and his Cosmic Country backing band have road tested at gigs across the U.S., with over 220 shows in 2022 alone. Frequent live favorites including “Hi-Country”, “Sugar Leg Rag”, and “Locomotive No. 9” dot the album while compositions like the two-parter “Dance In The Desert (Pts 1 & 2)” and the blues-funk “Double Exposure” showcase Donato’s versatile songwriting.
With “Lose Your Mind”, Donato’s signature blend of cosmic country brew is on full display. Rollicking rockabilly rhythms from drummer Noah Miller keep the track chugging along while Donato keeps his six-string (relatively) subdued as he places the emphasis on his introspective lyrics. During the refrain, Donato’s stable of strong singers Nathan Aronowitz (keyboards/vocals) and Will McGee (bass/vocals) come together to join in a heavenly chorus before Danny sets his fingers loose on the neck of his guitar.
The Reflector announcement marks the latest high-water mark of a historic year for Donato. In 2023 he has already shared the stage with Bob Weir, Widespread Panic, and—just this past weekend—Billy Strings. Next month, Donato will join Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann‘s familial supergroup Billy & The Kids for the Dead on the Water run in New York City and Baltimore. After that comes even more touring, both with his solo outfit and the Allman Brothers Band tribute act Trouble No More, set to carry him well into fall.
