Goose was feeling the red, white, and “U.S. Blues” on the 4th of July during the band’s second of two concerts at Asbury Park, NJ’s Stone Pony Summer Stage. The beach-adjacent show at the Jersey Shore musical hotspot included the band’s debut of the Grateful Dead classic as well as John Cafferty‘s “Wild Summer Nights”.

After an explosive Monday night show coordinated with Asbury Park’s fireworks display, Goose returned to the Summer Stage with additional pyrotechnics of its own. The front end of the first set cruised through originals “Atlas Dogs”, “Turbulence & The Night Rays”, and “Mr. Action” before the band stretched out on lengthy renditions of “Butter Rum” and “Tumble”, punctuating set one with the “U.S. Blues” debut. The Grateful Dead classic has become a staple of lead guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, guitarist/keyboardist Peter Anspach, and auxiliary percussionist Jeff Arevalo‘s aGoosetic side project Orebolo, but Tuesday marked its first appearance at a proper Goose show.

Taking the stage for set two amid chants of “Goose S A!” from the crowd, the band members debuted a cover they allegedly learned backstage, John Cafferty’s “Wild Summer Nights”. The song was popularized by the 1983 musical drama Eddie and the Cruisers, a low-budget picture set in New Jersey about a missing rock star and an experimental lost album.

The cinematic theme continued in the following “Thatch” as Peter tossed out teases from Johnny Rivers‘ “Secret Agent Man”. Later on in the frame, Goose had one more cover in store with 4 Non Blondes‘ pop hit “What’s Up”, a song the band hadn’t played since 10/7/22 (67 shows ago). After wrapping up the set with a nearly 20-minute “Arrow”, Goose bid farewell to the Jersey Shore with a “Slow Ready” encore to cap its Independence Day celebration.
