Dead & Company ended their Final Tour on Sunday with the third of three sold-out concerts at San Francisco’s Oracle Park. Guitarist John Mayer is the latest member of the band to leave the door open for future Dead & Company performances.

“Dead & Company is still a band – we just don’t know what the next show will be,” Mayer wrote on social media. “I speak for us all when I say that I look forward to being shown the next shaft of light… I know we will all move towards it together.”

The sentences about Dead & Company’s suddenly bright future comes as part of a note of gratitude from John Mayer. “This music has made me a better player, and this band made me a better person,” stated Mayer in the text accompanying photos of Sunday’s show. “I was given the honor of a lifetime – to have access to the greatest songbook in modern music, and the deepest well of life memories shared by hundreds of thousands of Deadheads who extended their grace and acceptance to me. I learned to compromise, and to take other people’s chances along with them.

“I learned to play in real time, to express myself without the distraction of ambition or expectation. I learned to listen, to have musical conversation, and most importantly, to be a part of something much bigger than myself,” the guitarist continued. “It was never about me. It was bout ‘it’ – that spirit that a band and a crowd could go looking for together. If I’ve done my job right, I’ll disappear into that beautiful tapestry, the one that began almost 60 years ago and will continue to expand for lifetimes to come.”

John Mayer went on to thank Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann for the opportunity. “This band changed my life, and I love you all for it. An incredible tour, an unforgettable ride, and a beautiful world of memories to visit. I’ll be seeing you…,” ended the note.

Dead & Company was formed by Weir, Hart, Kreutzmann, Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti in 2015. The sextet embarked on tours each summer since with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic, as well as a handful of other assorted tours and runs. Last September, Dead & Company revealed their last tour would take place in the summer of 2023. Dates and venues for “The Final Tour” were announced two weeks later.

Bill Kreutzmann parted ways with Dead & Company just before The Final Tour started. Jay Lane stepped up to fill his seat. The sextet played 29 shows between May 19 and July 16. An impressive chemistry from the new lineup was forged immediately. Mickey Hart recently hinted at future Dead & Company shows while speaking with ABC Audio, while Oteil Burbridge said ‘no one seems to have an answer for’ why the band was calling it quits.
