The death of rapper MF DOOM was caused by a rare and severe reaction to a blood pressure medication, a new report reveals. An inquiry by Jasmine Dumile, the wife of the masked emcee born Daniel Dumile, is revealing new information about his final days. MF DOOM died at age 49 on October 31st, 2020 (though it was not announced until December 31st) and until now his cause of death was not revealed publicly.
MF DOOM reportedly suffered a number of health issues toward the end of his life including kidney disease and high blood pressure, per LeedsLive. According to Jasmine, shortly before his death he was put on an ACE inhibitor to treat his blood pressure, but after just two doses developed swelling of the mouth and throat—a condition known as angioedema—hospitalizing him with breathing issues.
The British-born rapper who repatriated in 2010 (after being barred re-entry to the U.S. following a European tour) was admitted to St. James’s University Hospital in Leeds, England in late October 2020. It was there that his condition worsened and, due to COVID regulations, Jasmine was not allowed to see him until October 31st when the respirator allowing him to breathe was unplugged.
In the inquiry into DOOM’s death, Jasmine alleges that he was not properly monitored by hospital staff and that they delayed administering medication for his swollen throat for two hours. At one point, DOOM called Jasmine to tell her that his swelling was getting worse, prompting Jasmine to use a second phone and call the nurses on duty to alert them of his condition. She claims that her husband was unable to alert hospital staff of his condition as his “buzzer” was out of reach. The inquest into MF DOOM’s death at St. James’s is ongoing.
In the nearly three years since DOOM’s death, posthumous collaborations have continued to roll out, most notably Black Thought and Danger Mouse‘s Cheat Codes track “Belize”. DOOM has also appeared on tracks with Flying Lotus, BADBADNOTGOOD, Your Old Droog, and others.
